Tone Effects
Here are some guidelines, if you are creating tonal effects for your character:
- Hard-edged color-split body shadows must be indicated with a black line and may be drawn on the same level as the character. This will result in flat, manga-style shadows which are simply another color region.
- Simple blend-edged color-split body shadows may be made from a single level of drawings. Draw the color-split line in black as indicated above for hard-edges.
- Complex soft-edged semi-transparent tonal regions (like the tonal effects in 'Space Jam') must be drawn in black outline on a separate level of paper. These regions may be given any degree of opacity, any color or blend of colors, and be textured. The tonal drawings need not match to the character outline as they can be cut by an automatically generated character matte.
- Semi-transparent soft-edged ground shadows may be drawn in black outline on a separate level. The shadow drawing need not match to the character outline as it can be placed beneath the character level like a separate cel.
- Dry brush and other such effects are best drawn in black as a separate level.
- Body shadows, highlights, ground shadows and effects are best drawn separately, each on their own paper level to get the broadest range of possible visual effects. Where two or more effects are on the same paper level they will have to share the same blur value or applied texture.
